How it works
The family
Name the household and add its members; they appear as genogram symbols in the center circle.
The systems
Add work, school, extended family, friends, faith community, health care, services, or any other system, with a note.
The connections
Choose strong, moderate, weak or stressful, add arrows for the flow of support, and connect to the whole family or one member.
What the lines mean
- Strong: a thick solid line. Moderate: a thin solid line.
- Weak or tenuous: a dashed line.
- Stressful: a line crossed by short marks; strong but stressful is a thick one.
- Arrows show the flow of energy, time, money or support: toward the family, toward the system, or both ways.
These are the conventions of Ann Hartman's ecomap, the standard in social work. More detail and an example are in what is an ecomap.
Using an ecomap in an assessment
Draw the ecomap with the family, not about them: ask who they turn to for help, where they spend their time and money, and what drains them. The finished map makes it easy to see missing supports and sources of stress, and to come back later and compare. Pair it with a genogram to see the family across generations too.
Questions
Is the ecomap maker free?
Yes. No sign-up and no watermark. The site is paid for by ads.
Is the information uploaded?
No. The ecomap is drawn in your browser and saved only on this device. Nothing is sent to a server.
Can I print a blank ecomap?
Yes: Blank ecomap template (PDF) gives you a center circle, ten empty circles and the key, to fill in by hand during an interview.
How many systems can I add?
As many as you need; around 8 to 12 keeps the map easy to read. The circles get smaller as you add more.
