How to draw a pedigree
- Start with the proband, the person who brought the family to attention; the chart marks them with an arrow.
- Add the parents, then the grandparents on each side, and the brothers and sisters in birth order.
- For each person, set the trait: unaffected, affected (filled), carrier (half filled) or carrier shown with a dot.
- Mark deaths with the Deceased box, and couples related by blood with Related by blood.
- Download the PDF: generations are numbered with Roman numerals and each person gets a number, like II-3.
The symbols and the inheritance patterns (autosomal dominant and recessive, X-linked) are explained in pedigree chart symbols and how to read a pedigree.
Pedigree or genogram?
A genetic pedigree follows one trait through a family. A genogram shows relationships, health and life events in general. And if you are tracing your ancestors, the genealogy kind of pedigree chart is in the printable templates.
Questions
Can I show a carrier with a dot instead of half shading?
Yes. Choose Carrier, not affected (dot) under Trait. Half shading is the usual way to show carriers of autosomal recessive traits; the dot is common for women who carry an X-linked trait.
How are the people numbered?
Each generation gets a Roman numeral, from I at the top, and the people in it are numbered from left to right. The numbers update as you add people.
Is it free and private?
Yes. No sign-up, and the chart is saved only in your browser.
