How it works
Start with the index person
The person the genogram is about, drawn with a double outline. Type their name, year of birth and anything worth noting.
Add the family
Click + Parents, + Brother or sister, + Partner or + Child. Grandparents, aunts and uncles, cousins, step-parents and half-siblings all fit.
Add the story
Mark divorces, deaths, illnesses and alcohol or drug problems, and draw lines for closeness, conflict and cutoffs. Download a PDF with the key.
Why use this genogram maker
Confidential by design
A genogram holds sensitive details about real people. Here it is drawn in your browser and never uploaded, stored or shared.
Standard symbols
McGoldrick's genogram conventions for couples, children, losses, health and emotional relationships, laid out automatically.
Ready to hand in
A clean PDF or a 300 dpi image on Letter, A4, Tabloid or A3, with a key that lists only the symbols you used.
Free, no account
No sign-up, no trial and no watermark. Save your genogram as a small file and open it again later.
What you can show
- Three or more generations: grandparents on both sides, parents with their brothers and sisters, the index person with siblings, partners, children and grandchildren.
- Couples: married or living together, separated or divorced, with the years; several partners per person, so blended families and remarriages work.
- Children: biological, adopted or foster, twins and identical twins, pregnancies, miscarriages and stillbirths.
- Health: physical or mental illness, alcohol or drug problems (confirmed or suspected), with notes such as diabetes or depression.
- Emotional relationships: close, very close, distant, conflict, close but conflictual, cutoff, abuse and focused on.
The symbols are explained in genogram symbols and lines. New to genograms? Read what a genogram is and how to make one, or open one of the genogram examples.
For class assignments
Most courses ask for three generations with dates, at least two health patterns and the emotional relationships, plus a key. Use first names or initials if your genogram is about your own family, check the symbols your instructor prefers, and add the date. To put the genogram in a Word or Google Docs paper, use Save as image and insert the picture; it stays sharp at 300 dpi.
Questions
Is the genogram maker free?
Yes. There is no sign-up, no trial and no watermark. The site is paid for by ads.
Is my genogram uploaded or stored?
No. It is drawn by your own browser and saved only in this browser on this device. Nothing is sent to a server. Use Save file to keep a copy or move it to another computer.
Which genogram symbols does it use?
The standard conventions from McGoldrick, Gerson and Petry's Genograms: squares for men, circles for women, a diamond for nonbinary or unknown, a double outline for the index person, an X for a death, slashes for separation and divorce, and the usual lines for emotional relationships.
How many generations can I add?
Grandparents, parents, the index person and their children and grandchildren: up to five rows. On the parents' side you can add aunts, uncles and cousins.
Can I use it for a genogram template in Word?
Yes. Make the genogram here, choose Save as image and insert it into Word or Google Docs. For a blank form to fill in by hand, print the genogram template.
Can I make an ecomap too?
Yes: the ecomap maker draws the family's connections to work, school, friends and services, often used with a genogram.
